I’m Courtney! Born and raised in Austin, Texas, I have spent my life wandering through the woods of the Texas Hill Country, tubing it’s rivers, boot scoot’n in its dance halls and exploring this great state with so much diverse beauty. I travel out to the high deserts of West Texas as often as I can to see the night skies in the darkest place in North America and soak up the big skies and desert landscape.

I started oil painting when I was 9 and haven’t stopped. Mostly self taught, I love to paint places I feel connected to and hope these paintings act as windows for others to feel connected to them too. I love to paint people, and try to capture something about their spirits. Often my models are part of my family, friends or people I meet at coffee shops. Nostalgia and mystery are common themes in my work, and something called “Sehnsucht,” it’s a German word that really resonates with me and drives almost exclusively all my work. It means an intense yearning, longing or pining, we feel especially about facets of life that are unfinished or imperfect, a longing for something more. It’s that thing we chase, but never catch. There is no English word equivalent. But it’s that longing for something people may feel with nostalgia or for some elusive dream of the future.

Often when I paint night lights, children with glow sticks, candles or blue flowers, these are all symbols for this word “Sehnsucht.”
